Tax for delivery & rideshare drivers (Uber, DoorDash)

Driving for Uber, DiDi, DoorDash, Uber Eats or Amazon Flex means you're running your own small business — which changes how tax works. Here's what delivery and rideshare drivers need to know for 2025–26.

You're a business — ABN and GST

Gig driving income is business income, so you'll need an ABN. The GST rules differ by type of work: ride-sourcing (carrying passengers, e.g. Uber/DiDi) generally requires you to register for GST from the first dollar you earn, while food delivery is usually treated under the standard $75,000 GST threshold.

This catches a lot of new drivers out, so it's worth getting right. Confirm your GST position — your consultant can help you sort it.

Car expenses — your biggest claim

Your vehicle is the main cost of the job. You can use the cents-per-kilometre method (simpler, capped at 5,000 business km) or the logbook method (better for high mileage), which lets you claim a work-use percentage of fuel, rego, insurance, servicing and depreciation.

A logbook and records of your driving make a real difference to this claim.

Other things you can claim

Beyond the car, the running costs of driving add up and are commonly claimable for the work-use portion.

  • Phone and data used for the driver app
  • Phone mount, chargers and delivery bags
  • Tolls and parking while working
  • Car cleaning, water and mints for passengers (rideshare)
  • Commissions and service fees the platform charges you

Keep good records

Because you're a business, keep your income statements from each platform, a logbook or kilometre record, and receipts for expenses. Setting money aside for tax as you go avoids a bill at lodgement.

Frequently asked

Do I need an ABN to drive for Uber or DoorDash?

Yes — gig driving is business income and needs an ABN. Getting one is free and your consultant can guide you.

Do I have to register for GST?

For rideshare/passenger transport, generally yes — from the first dollar. For food delivery, usually only once you pass the $75,000 threshold. Confirm your specific situation.

Can I claim my car?

Yes — the work-use share of your car costs is your biggest deduction, via cents-per-km or the logbook method. Keep records of your driving.

What if I also have a regular job?

You combine both on one return — your salary (PAYG) plus your driving (ABN). Because tax usually isn't withheld from gig income, setting some aside helps.
